About Me

I heard jazz around the house as I was growing up though my own musical interests, like those of my generation, were primarily rock & roll and rhythm & blues (Motown and Stax).

Three experiences in particular, drew me to jazz. While passing through a college student union as an anti-Vietnam war organizer in 1972 I heard a version of “Just My Imagination” playing on a jukebox. It grabbed me and I searched out the album, by Houston Person at a record store. That began my love affair with jazz. A few years later I found the four classic recordings of the first great Miles Davis quintet, “Cooking,” “Relaxing,” “Working” and ”Steaming.”

Finally, after moving back to New York City, I discovered my uncle's enormous collection of jazz records and, in particular, a trove of recordings by Bill Evans. I was completely hooked and have been for over 30 years.
