Harris Eisenstadt Two LPs on NoBusiness Records

Giveaway Music: Harris Eisenstadt Two LPs on NoBusiness Records

Prize: Two LPs: Woodblock Prints & Whatever Will Happen That Will Also Be by Harris Eisenstadt

Eligible Winners: 1

Woodblock Prints is a limited edition LP featuring Eisenstadt's charts for a nine member small orchestra. Each side exhibits a pleasing symmetry, beginning with a short horn trio, then a longer cut for the full ensemble, and finally a more convoluted mid-length piece. At times sounding like a post-modern version of the classic Miles Davis Birth of the Cool band, the music is very patient and thoughtful, and one could imagine the past masters of the art of woodblock printing nodding their heads in approval of the craft involved—Drummer Harris Eisenstadt’s bands cover the field between hard-edged intricacy and chamber delicacy quite handily. While doesn’t make it hard to hear his interests in African, Cuban, and classical music, he usually doesn’t make genre the point. But it’s hard not to sound classical when you compose for a string quartet, and this four-part suite lacks the sort of rhythmic assertiveness that could signal that a jazz drummer composed it. The Mivos Quartet’s performance keeps the each voice distinct, which emphasizes the three-dimensionality of the music from moment to moment. The LP, which was pressed in an edition of 300 in Germany and sounds as unfussily immaculate as the crisply designed cover, amplifies this experience—These thoughtful albums are clearly a labor of love for all concerned.

Winner will receive a copy of these wonderful LP recordings along with the downloadable files.

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
