by Hrayr Attarian
David's Angels creates stimulating sonic landscapes out of a unique fusion of various genres. Although electric bassist David Carlsson is the nominal leader of this innovative Danish-Swedish quartet and the producer of its second release, What It Seems, the album's signature sound is built around singer Sofie Norling's haunting delivery and incandescent tone. Norling not only penned all the lyrics, she also composed the music on this dark-hued paean to love's demise, together with keyboardist Maggi Olin. The melancholic ...

by Eyal Hareuveni
The Swedish quartet David's Angels has proven in its debut release, Substar (Kopasetic, 2010), its ability to encompass emotionally charged issues with expressive, storytelling musical articulations. The sophomore release puts this approach in a more demanding test. What It Seems chronicles the demise of a meaningful love affair and its protagonist, singer-songwriter Sofie Norling making the peace process with its emotional implications-- the feeling of betrayal, loneliness, anger but also the needed sense of liberation. Norling's songs ...

by Eyal Hareuveni
lim has been active now for more than ten years but the Swedish trio's members share a much deeper history. Saxophonist Henrik Frisk and drummer Peter Nilsson spent part of their adolescence in the same small town in southern Sweden (as did photographer Stefan Lundgren, whose art graces the release's cover), with bassist David Carlsson coming from a neighboring town. The trio has, over the years, developed tight but elastic interplay, despite the complexity of its compositions. ...

by Eyal Hareuveni
This masterful recording by Swedish-born, Denmark-resident bassist Thommy Andersson and Danish pianist Jacob Anderskov, plus Swedish drummer Peter Nilsson--each of them a leader in his own right--presents a Nordic interpretation of free improvised music. The focus of the trio is not on energetic, dense and fiery playing but on the intensity of responsive and patient interplay, tonal richness, and changing dynamics, where the leader of each improvisation is challenged by the other players in true democratic manner, free of any ...
