Pawel Kaczmarczyk Audiofeeling Trio & Mr Krime: Vars & Kaper:Deconstruction
by Ian Patterson
Doubtless some were surprised when pianist/composer Pawel Kaczmarczyk left ACT Records after the ambitious Complexity in Simplicity (2009). However, the decision has perhaps proven to be a musically astute one, given the stunning statement from Kaczmarczyk's Audiofeeling Trio--featuring one of Poland's top rhythm sections in Maciej Adamczak and Dawid Fortuna--that was Something Personal (Hevhetia, 2015). Here, the same line-up is augmented by Mr. Krime (Wojceich Dlugosz) on turntables and electronics in a powerful reimagining of Bronislaw Kaper and Henryk Vars' ...

by Ian Patterson
For fans of Pawel Kaczmarczyk it's been a lengthy wait for a follow-up to Complexity in Simplicity (ACT Music, 2009), his sole recording for Siggi Loch's label. Six years seems like too long a gap for such a prodigiously talented performer and composer but this extended stewing period sees the Krakow pianist return in absolutely splendid form with Something Personal, his fourth album as a leader. On Complexity in Simplicity Kaczmarczyk was bursting with ideas, harnessing a dozen of Poland's ...

by Eyal Hareuveni
This meeting of three distinct European sound sculptors--Austrian Franz Hautzinger on quarter-tone trumpet, Slovakian Julo Fujak on prepared piano, bowed bass guitar and objects, and Hungarian Zsolt Sörés on viola and electronics--was recorded live at Studio Odeon 120 in Brussels in November 2011. It features this occasional trio searching for fresh, intuitive codes of making music. The highly original manners of producing and shaping sounds of these three musicians and their different conceptions of time, space ...

by Eyal Hareuveni
On his sophomore release, Israeli pianist Ofir Shwartz leads a new trio comprised with Israeli double bassist Gal Shaya and Slovenian drummer Gasper Bertoncelj. This release features Shwartz's progression as a composer and bandleader since his debut release, Earlier in time (sHmoo Records, 2010). Shwartz's vocabulary draws inspiration from modern jazz-- mainly in its myriad lyrical incarnations, pop songs, and progressive and heavy rock. His gift to sketch highly melodic themes is apparent throughout this recording. His trio ...

by Eyal Hareuveni
The ambient soundscapes of the project wESTA MAN feature fascinating sounds that portray the dark world of the seas and seabed, engines, machines and ships around the Mtoni Marine Center in Zanzibar. Three Norwegian sound experimentalists devised this project, drummer Erland Dahlen, member of the Nils Petter Molvær Trio, who released last year an excellent solo album, Rolling Bomber (Hubro music, 2012), free lance guitarist Bjorn Charles Dreyer, who recorded two duo albums with Dahlen (This is not Sweden and ...

by Bruce Lindsay
The Otto Hejnic Trio is that relatively unusual creature, a drummer-led piano trio. The group hails from the Czech Republic where One, its debut, was recorded in late 2011. It's an impressive first release. The trio--Hejnic, Ondrej Krajňák on piano and Josef Fečo on double bass--proves to be a tight and dynamic unit. The music, all Hejnic's original tunes, displays straight-ahead, Latin and European classical influences combined to create an album of varied moods and tempos performed with a consistently ...
