Gunhild Seim: Story Water

Read "Story Water" reviewed by Eyal Hareuveni

Story Water is the most ambitious achievement of Norwegian trumpeter Gunhild Seim. It is a musical fantasy inspired by texts about the universes of dreams and death, commissioned by the VossaJazz Festival and recorded live at the festival's opening day in March 2012. Seim expands her modern jazz-based musical language, as was documented before with her Time Jungle band, including a collaboration with acclaimed pianist Marilyn Crispell, (Elephant Wings, Drollehålå, 2012). With a new, unconventional cast of ...

Gunhild Seim Time Jungle, with Marilyn Crispell: Elephant Wings

Read "Elephant Wings" reviewed by Eyal Hareuveni

With Elephant Wings, Norwegian trumpeter Gunhild Seim grows the number of albums released, since beginning her career as bandleader of Time Jungle more than five years ago, to three, including 2007's Time Jungle and 209's Morpho, all released on her own Drollehålå imprint. Read "Morpho" reviewed by Eyal Hareuveni

Seim matches intensity and adventurous improvisation--typical of improvisers coming from her hometown such as reed player Frode Gjerstad and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love--with nuanced, melodic lines of chamber jazz that are identified with the ECM style of Nordic jazz, all fused into organic, collective interplay. Seim is accompanied by an ...

Read "Time Jungle" reviewed by Eyal Hareuveni

Norwegian trumpeter/composer Gunhild Seim lives in Stavanger, where many Norwegian musicians who play outside the ECM school--including reed player Frode Gjerstad, trumpeter Didrik Ingvaldsen, drummer Paal Nilssen-Love and organist Nils Henrik Asheim--developed their musical language for free improvisation. Seim is one of the leaders of the local ensemble, Kitchen Orchestra, and leads her own quartet on this debut recording on her own Drolleholå Music label.

For this recording Seim enlisted New York-based reed player Andrew D'Angelo to produce ...

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
