Maryanne DeProphetis: Tell A Star
La ricerca vocale minimalista e astratta di Maryanne de Prophetis è troppo sofisticata per ottenere l'attenzione del grande pubblico ma mantiene un'audience affezionata nei club di New York City. Dal 2002 guida il trio col pianista Frank Kimbrough e il trombettista Ron Horton con cui ha pubblicato due dischi, A Glance nel 2005 e Lilacs in Winter nel 2010; con questi e altri partner Maryanne s'é esibita regolarmente al Kitano, al Cornelia Street Café, al 55 Bar e in altri locali della metropoli.

Nella sua formazione musicale hanno svolto un influsso determinante gli studi con il sassofonista Warne Marsh e con la vocalist Jay Clayton che hanno accentuato le sue tendenze espressive cameristiche e la sperimentazione su timbri e dinamiche. Ma nella sua arte non c'è solo questo. In Tell a Star la DeProphetis conferma di saper essere anche una cantante ortodossa, interpretando ballad intime e rarefatte, equilibrando i suoi ricercati interventi con quelli di Kimbrough e Horton. Il disco tratteggia un percorso di sospensioni e chiaroscuri, con momenti scritti e altri in libero confronto improvvisato, talvolta veemente.

Tra i momenti più tradizionali ricordiamo il radioso "Piper's Dream," con i lirici interventi di Kimbrough e Horton che aggiungono calore all'evanescente canto colloquiale di Maryanne. Tra quelli improntati alla sperimentazione cameristica, con la voce che dialoga alla pari coi partner, abbiamo apprezzato "Rosa," "Holy Cow" e "Plainsong."
