Se qualcuno cerca un disco adatto per un blindfold test di quelli "tosti", per incastrare l'amico saccente che tutto conosce del jazz d'avanguardia, ecco serviti sul piatto i ventiquattrominuti di questo Peace Concert, duo tra il sax contralto di Mat Maneri e la batteria di Peter Dolger.

Pregustatevi già la faccia del malcapitato di fronte al pigolare irrequieto del sassofono sopra gli accenti dei tamburi… ma chi saranno sti due? E soprattutto, quando è stato registrato quest'incontro?

Non si sa con precisione: la data potrebbe variare tra la fine del 1963 e l'inizio del 1964, nella St. Peter Church di New York, poco tempo dopo l'incisione di Paniots Nine [nel cui quartetto, dalle forti venature etniche, c'era anche Dolger]. Siamo in un periodo di forte transizione per il jazz d'avanguardia, prima di A Love Supreme e ovviamente del duo similare di Interstellar Space, sulle soglie del boom ayleriano e così via, ma non è molto probabile che Maneri fosse a conoscenza del lavoro dei colleghi: lui e Dolger avevano più familiarità con la musica tradizionale - che suonavano anche nei matrimoni - e la sua personalissima ricerca espressiva si stava costruendo in maniera piuttosto autonoma.

La musica di questa testimonianza strappata all'oblio del tempo è come fuori dal tempo, emozionante e algida allo stesso tempo, apollinea e straziata, free e cool, un continuo respiro improvvisativo di straordinaria attualità [non a caso Maneri è stato riscoperto in età avanzata]. Completa il disco un'intervista a Maneri condotta da Stu Vandermark, il padre di Ken cui si deve questa splendida riscoperta.

E adesso sotto con il blindfold test! La vittima ci farà probabilmente una figuraccia, ma vi ringrazierà per la musica.
