This show marks the one-year anniversary of publishing One Man's Jazz on All About Jazz's radio section, and we're taking a decided dip into the "deep end" of the improvisation pool. There's lots of avant-garde, experimental, free form, free improv on the bill. Is it "noise," is it the future? That's for the listener to decide, so here's some music to do just that: listen. You'll hear challenging pieces from the likes of Paul Plimley, Joao Lencastre, Sensaround (Alister Spence, Raymond MacDonald), Evan Parker, David Leon, Aki Takase, Rich Halley, Finland's Hot Heros, Satoko Fujii and From Wolves to Whales (Nate Wooley, Dave Rempis, Pascal Niggenkemper, Chris Corsano). And since much of this highly creative music was juiced by Chicago's AACM, I added a couple of tracks from French drummer Denis Fournier / Nicole Mitchell who has drawn upon his connections into the AACM for his recording Watershed.

All About Jazz needs your support

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded albums and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, limited reopenings and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary step that will help musicians and venues now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the sticky footer ad). Thank you!
