Quattro rappresentanti della storica scena downtown newyorchese si riuniscono negli studi East Side Sound di quella città e registrano un disco tributo all'Oscar Pettiford violoncellista. Nove brani mostrano senza veli l'eleganza, lo swing, il senso melodico, la precisione della scrittura di Pettiford, con il quartetto di Erik Friedlander che asseconda pienamente queste caratteristiche esaltandole e personalizzandole quanto basta.

L'approccio è quindi rispettoso del materiale originale ma i quattro hanno risorse, inventiva e sensibilità da vendere per tenere alla larga Oscalypso dalle sabbie mobile di una generica operazione retro o nostalgica. La suddivisione dei ruoli è netta, marcata, il violoncello del leader e i sassofoni di Michael Blake sono le voci soliste, Michael Sarin alla batteria e Trevor Dunn al contrabbasso l'inventiva sezione ritmica.

Ma questo non impedisce alla musica di risultare mossa, stimolante, affascinante, propositiva, con assoli degni di nota, unisoni sinuosi, controcanti da brivido, con il violoncello di Friedlander forte di una classicità ormai difficile da confutare ed il sax di Blake impeccabile nel riportare in vita il suono e gli umori di un'epoca d'oro (quella in cui Lucky Thompson, un modello di riferimento per Blake, duettava con Pettiford, idolo di Friedlander), senza rinunciare a elementi di palpabile modernità.
