Il Goatette di Jeff Gauthier è una delle formazioni più interessanti che operano nella West Coast americana, spostandosi senza soluzione di continuità fra un jazz molto spiritato e il rock progressivo più denso. Una sorta di Mahavishnu Orchestra diretta dal violinista invece che dal chitarrista.

Rispetto alle prove precedenti abbiamo l'inserimento della tromba di John Fumo, che dopo qualche timidezza iniziale si allinea velocemente alle tirate energiche tipiche di questa band che può contare anche sulla verve creativa ed esecutiva dell'ottimo chitarrista Nels Cline e sulle efficaci percussioni del suo fratello gemello Alex che sta dietro ai tamburi.

Il violino di Jeff Gauthier è elegante e sulfureo allo stesso tempo, capace di evocare scenari pastorali con raffinata sensibilità per poi arrotolarsi le maniche e procedere a fare legna senza remore. La stessa dicotomia è presente in generale nel progetto ed in particolare caratterizza il lavoro del tastierista David Witham che è sempre pronto ad alternare momenti quasi classicheggianti al pianoforte acustico con sparate di lava incandescente lanciate dalle tastiere elettriche.

Gauthier scrive quattro composizioni su sette e ne lascia una al tastierista (l'interessante "From a Rainy Night"). Il resto del programma è completato dalla rilettura di "Joy of a Toy" di Ornette Coleman e da un brano del compianto Eric Von Essen, il bassista prematuramente scomparso parecchi anni fa, al quale tutti i musicisti di questo giro erano particolarmente legati.
