Luigi Campoccia: On the Way to Damascus
Alla corte di Sergio Caputo prima e di Giorgio Gaber dopo, per ben 15 anni, Luigi Campoccia aveva un'idea fissa in testa: disegnare traiettorie musicali che lo portassero, attraverso il Mediterraneo, diritto in Siria. Un percorso di arte e cultura, musica e tradizioni ricco di fascino storico e misteri persi nel tempo.

Dopo un paio di dischi tematici, tra tributi a Gaber (4 You) e escursioni jazz (Walking About Jazz), era giunto il momento di provare a misurarsi con un'idea di commistione musicale che non facesse torto a nessuno. Né ai puristi, né ai tradizionalisti, né ai modernisti.

Aveva bisogno, per questo suo progetto, di affidarsi a musicisti che lo aiutassero negli equilibri timbrici. Li ha trovati in Turchia. Senol Finiz è uno specialista del ney, un flauto tra gli strumenti più antichi del mondo, che già da solo è capace di far immaginare "scenari musicali altri" ("On the Way to Damascus," "Cizi Kiz," "Kacsam Birakip"). Onder Focan è un chitarrista ammirabile che riesce con la sei corde a caratterizzare questo "viaggio" immaginario e suggestivo.

Affianco, Capoccia ha scelto il sax soprano e tenore di Daniele Malvisi che riesce a soffiare linee melodiche vellutate dal sapore di salsedine ("Breathing Shell"). C'è poi la base ritmica di Paolo Corsi e Rossano Gasperini. Entrambi riescono a dare una connotazione di jazz rock e fusion vivacizzante ("Oasis," "Middle Way").

Un CD nel segno delle "terre di mezzo" del jazz.
