Frank Potenza: Old, New, Borrowed & Blue
Frank Potenza è un chitarrista elettrico americano che tiene stabilmente un piede e mezzo nella tradizione, rappresentata dal suo vecchio mentore Joe Pass e dai vari Kenny Burrell, Jimmy Raney e George Benson, riservandosi qualche sottile elemento distintivo che gli consente di poter immaginare una musica che non è certamente rivoluzionaria ma che allo stesso tempo non si nega qualche fermento evolutivo.

Nel caso di questo piacevole Old, New, Borrowed & Blue viene mantenuta l'impostazione di base del trio chitarra, organo Hammond, batteria e viene aggiunto il flauto di Holly Hofmann come elemento distintivo che si amalgama benissimo nella musica del gruppo, spargendo nell'aria frammenti melodici di dolcissima fattura, a cominciare dal brano di apertura, un brioso "Ready and Able" che arriva dal book dell'organista Jimmy Smith.

Un ulteriore elemento che modernizza un contesto che altrimenti rischierebbe di restare inevitabilmente legato agli anni cinquanta e sessanta, è il repertorio che mischia brani di provenienza prettamente jazzistica come "Road Song" del mitico Wes Montgomery e "Party Time" di Lee Morgan, con cavalli di battaglia del rhythm 'n' blues e del pop-rock come "Ode to Billie Joe," "I'm Walkin'" (che vede Potenza impegnato anche come cantante) e "You've Got a Friend". Non manca una composizione originale di Frank Potenza ("Jacaranda") che sottolinea anche la presenza di sapori sud-americani, utili per completare la ricetta.
