34 anni, da quindici a New York, Justin Brown è noto per le sue partnership con Ambrose Akinmusire, Vijay Iyer, Stefon Harris, Esperanza Spalding, Christian McBride, Thundercat e altri. Come si vede è un batterista dall'ampio spettro stilistico e questo suo debutto discografico da leader lo conferma ampiamente.

La musica di Nyeusi è una fusion elettro-acustica che sulle radici elettroniche degli anni settanta (Weather Report, Tony Williams, Headhunters) costruisce un percorso influenzato dal funk, dall'hip hop e dalle sperimentazioni di J Dilla, Karriem Riggins, Karriem Riggins e Jamire Williams.Qualcuno sarà stupito dalla scelta del batterista di coinvolgere musicisti come Almazan, Lindner e Shim che abitualmente associamo a contesti acustici mentre qui usano esclusivamente strumenti elettronici. L'album è stato inciso nel 2015 e il gruppo di Brown ha continuato a esibirsi dal vivo con qualche variazione d'organico.

Il percorso musicale è un electro-funk inventivo con soluzioni ritmico-melodiche diverse, dove il drumming poliritmico e frammentato del leader spazia da momenti esplosivi (”Jupiter's Gian Red Spot”, ”Lots for Nothin'”). ad altri distesi (”Replenish” o ”Waiting on Aubade” possono definirsi cantabili). Nuovi e intriganti percorsi rispetto alla fusion storica. Percorsi radicati nella black popular music contemporanea con variegate soluzioni timbriche e strutturalmente meno sperimentali di quanto si penserebbe. Le linee melodiche (sempre riconoscibili e spesso accattivanti) vengono sviluppate da Shim al wind controller o dal Rhodes di Almazan in un contesto timbrico ricco e cangiante. Tra i momenti più intensi ricordiamo l'iterativo ”Entering Purgatory”, il lirico ”Circa 45” e il gospel/funk sintetizzato ”FYFO”.
