La pubblicazione di questo CD avviene in concomitanza con l'ottantesimo compleanno del contrabbassista statunitense. Non è quindi il caso di fare le pulci ad un CD che celebra la carriera artistica di un grande protagonista del jazz moderno. Le undici tracce rappresentano il lato lunare ed intimistico del leader, a scapito dei gloriosi trascorsi avanguardistici. In ossequioso rispetto dell'estetica ECM, prevale un clima pacato e disteso con armonizzazioni raffinate. Il suo trio persegue linee melodiche suggestive mediante l'enunciazione delicata, ricercata attraverso la perfetta intonazione. In primo piano un cospicuo talento compositivo, nel presentare temi vecchi e nuovi per una pratica jazzistica varia e stimolante.

Seguendo la scia evansiana, il trio si muove con grande gusto entro un clima espressivo notturno ed introspettivo. Il trait d'union è dato dall'ignorare il virtuosismo scintillante in favore di brevi bozzetti aforistici. Si apprezza così un trio dal respiro comune cui sono estranee le tentazioni di vacuo protagonismo. Il flusso procede con misurato equilibrio con innegabile gusto narrativo e raffinatezza cameristica. Sia nei momenti più lirici che in quelli più aperti, le tre voci si intersecano alla perfezione, dando vita ad un percorso che non mancherà di appassionare i numerosi fans della label tedesca.
