Erik Friedlander: Nighthawks

Visto dal vivo all'inizio dell'anno presso il Pinocchio Live Jazz di Firenze (clicca qui per leggere la recensione del concerto), arriva su CD il quartetto Bonebridge di Erik Friedlander, un progetto che è stato definito "country da camera."

Anche su supporto registrato il quartetto conserva la suggestione data da un lato dalla purezza dei suoni, dall'altro dalle atmosfere delle composizioni. Le quali sono sì perlopiù ispirate da country, folk, o bluegrass (la cui miscela viene spesso descritta dagli statunitensi come "Americana") ma pescano anche in ambiti diversi—è il caso di "Carom," di chiara derivazione ebraica—oppure ampliano l'accezione country includendovi stilemi e riferimenti diversi—come nel caso della toccante "Nostalgia Blindside," nella quale l'eccellente Doug Wamble sfrutta numerose e disparate forme espressive con la sua chitarra.

Tra le dieci ottime composizioni, tutte di Friedlander, merita citare "Hopper's Blue House," sia perché narrativamente convincente, sia per il lavoro di concerto che vi svolgono Wamble—che ha il ruolo di delicata prima voce—e Friedlander—prima sostenitore del ritmo al pizzicato, poi autore di uno splendido assolo—e la lunga title track, che rende assai bene l'atmosfera notturna evocata dal titolo.

Poco da aggiungere sugli interpreti, tutti magistrali, inclusi ovviamente Trevor Dunn e Michael Sarin, che per quanto relegati in secondo piano hanno modo di farsi apprezzare da un ascoltatore attento.

Disco eccellente, curatissimo in tutti i suoi aspetti, come consuetudine del suo autore.
