Bernard - Emer - Lackner - Ferber: Night for Day

Night for Day è un buon esempio dell’equivoco, più o meno volontario, nel quale navigano molti musicisti delle nuove generazioni. Preparazione ferrea alle spalle, grande confidenza con i più disparati stili musicali, estrema scioltezza nel condividere l’esperienza musicale con colleghi dal diverso background formativo.

Ma poi, alla resa dei conti, permane l’incertezza sulla direzione da prendere, sulla capacità di elaborare un linguaggio personale che faccia tesoro della massa di sollecitazioni e di input esterni, evitando operazioni di copia-incolla o di comodi collages.

In questo Night for Day, per esempio, i quattro musicisti stanno in bilico tra uno straight ahead jazz moderno e aggiornato, e timide pulsione in avanti, passi titubanti nel campo della ricerca e della sperimentazione meno radicale. Così dopo tre brani ben suonati, eleganti, ma che scorrono via lisci, lisci, senza sussulti, troviamo “Dry Tortugas“, un blues irregolare, sconnesso, con interessanti soluzioni timbriche - i metalli di Ferber e la chitarra di Bernard -, attraversato da ruvidi fremiti elettrici.

Ancora un paio di brani piuttosto incolori ed ecco “Nothing to See“, altro blues colloso, notturno, ossessivo. Per arrivare a “Snow“, brano rarefatto nel quale finalmente Lackner mette in mostra il suo pianismo astratto ed un poco allucinato, che ci fa rimpiangere quello che Night for Day avrebbe potuto essere.
