Wednesday, June 30th African Jazz Group the Waaw Band and rocking, improvising Jewish power trio Rashanim will perform at The Knitting Factory in the Old Office. The Knitting Factory is located at 74 Leonard Street and the Old Office is in the basement of the club. Tickets will be $7.

Waaw Band's original approach to African Jazz is now being heard throughout the New York music scene exciting listeners making them sing, dance, and wanting to hear more. Formed in 2003, Waaw Band's progressive sound merges West African roots with concepts from the “downtown" New York music scene. These multicultural dimensions allow Waaw Band to produce a sound that is highly unique and exhilarating.

Thierno Camara (singer, songwriter, and bassist) first started the Waaw movement in Senegal, West Africa. He has performed internationally with some of Senegal's most recognized griots such as Thione Seck, Cheick Lo, Faton Gowel, and Kine Lam. In 1998, Thierno moved to New York collaborati ng with Sean Noonan (drumset) further developing the band's sound blending traditional African folk music and modern jazz. Together they have composed, arranged and further developed the concept for Waaw Band.

Sean Noonan (composer and drumset) has performed internationally in over 14 countries. Noonan's broad talent has allowed him to work in diverse genres including thrash jazz band The Hub and group Trio Jazz which is a blend of lyrical melody with rhythmic group improvisation. Noonan has released a wide variety of albums and performed in countless live shows combining his talent with masters such as John Lockwood, George Garzone, and Bob Moses.

Waaw's diverse talent also combines Aram Bajakian (guitar) with Jon Madof (guitar). The highly versatile and spontaneously driven guitarist Aram Bajakian has performed with Yusef Lateef and Ravi Shankar. Some of Bajakian's best work can be heard on his album “Chips" where he merges Jazz with Armenian folk music. Waaw guitarist Jon Madof will also be playing with rocking,improvising Jewish power trio Rashanim who have recorded for John Zorn's Tzadik records creating a sound which is described by the Village Voice as, “one of the best things to happen to Jewish music since Andy Statman or the Klezmatics." Madof is a downtown player for sure, whose sound keeps hyper-aware of his melodic approach to the guitar.
