Alexis Cole was awarded top prize at the 2007 Jazzmobile Vocal Competition in New York City.

At Sweet Rhythm Jazz Club, on Monday, June 25th, latecomers peered in past a packed house. The judges, among the most distinguished in jazz, included Dr. Billy Taylor, T.S. Monk, Grady Tate and Cat Russell. Each vocalist sang two songs and returned with a showstopper. Alexis chose difficult repertoire, including Clifford Brown's Joy Spring and Thelonious Monk's Ask Me Now. Her showstopper brought the audience back to basics with the Basie Blues Night Train.

Every Monday, throughout the month of June, the contestants participated in semi-finals. The first week featured twelve singers, which were narrowed down to just four finalists. This is the fourth year that Jazzmobile (a not-for-profit arts and educational institution founded by Dr. Billy Taylor in 1964) presented its annual vocal competition. Anheuser Busch contributed toward the sponsorship.

Riding the wave of her recent success, Alexis releases Zingaro, her third CD on Canopy Jazz, Monday, July 9, 2007, at the Zinc Bar in NYC. The CD features guitarist Ron Affif and bassist Jeffry Eckels.

Host Burton Segall of station KZYX says of Zingaro:

The grouping of musicians and somewhat minimalist style of accompanying is beautiful and very revealing. A lot of singers, even some that are good enough, would not perform or record in such a setting. I like your choices of tunes and your voice. Fine improvising.

This release comes at the end of her pre-release tour which includes performances at the Art of Jazz Festival in Toronto, Montreal Jazz Festival, One Caroline in Saratoga Springs, and Jazz Central Theater in Syracuse.

July 31, 2007 at 8:00 p.m. Join Alexis for a celebration of her victory. Sweet Rhythm NYC presents the Winner of the Jazzmobile Vocal Competition. This is her last big appearance before heading on her Japanese Tour!

December 11, 2007, keep an ear out for Alexis' next recording project. A Christmas CD, Benefit for World Bicycle Relief, will be recorded live at Sweet Rhythm NYC.
