Notes on the artists
February 11thDaniel Kelly's Rakonto: With his ensemble Rakonto (the word for story" in Esperanto), award-winning jazz composer/pianist Daniel Kelly imaginatively mixes recorded interviews with community members with his vibrant compositions. Personal histories of daily life, culture, and immigration are seamlessly entwined into the music, creating a compelling new way to hear the thoughts, dreams and reflections of the community.
Rakonto will perform the hour-long suite"Rakonto: A Sounding of Community Voices" which was commissioned by Flushing Town Hall and the New York State Council on the Arts.
Over the course of several months, Daniel interviewed dozens of people in the tremendously ethnically diverse community of Flushing, Queens, including students, senior citizens, business owners, children in afterschool programs, musicians performing Chinese, Korean and Indian music, people at churches and social service organizations. The recorded voices of these people are interwoven with the musicians in this imaginative musical ode to the community, creating an opportunity for the stories of many different people to be heard in a new way.
