SYNERGY: Sight and Sound

Synergy, a high-energy free-improvisational jazz band, the innovative collaboration between the sculptor/designer Amir Bey and the saxophonist/composer Saco Yasuma, continue their series of concerts at Bowery Poetry Club on Monday, May 8, at 8:30 PM.

Synergy's concept is based on combining the visual and musical arts; the sounds and movements of the musicians are visually enhanced, and audio potentials for sculpture are explored. In this performance, their theme will be spring, and the costumes, masks, and compositions are to be woven together to produce a celebration to the new energies being ushered in. The band, which includes the powerful and dynamic mix of Yasuma, Sabir Mateen, Ras Moshe, Jackson Krall and Francois Grillot, wears mixed media leather masks and silkscreen prints on satin costumes designed by Bey. Bey's set design combines long sheets of silkscreen prints on fabric with suspended percussive instruments that are multi-media mobiles and masks played by the musicians. Yasuma's original and festive compositions range from her forceful “The Roar of Wood", to the contemplative “Peace Dance", and “Rain". Yasuma, an alto saxophonist, also plays clarinet, bamboo saxophone, the Turkish sipsi, and percussive instruments.
