The Daniel Westin Quartet will release their debut recording Notes on Strangers Candy on May 15th. The album was recorded and produced by Åke Linton (Tonbruket, Esbjorn Svensson Trio) at Svenska Grammofonstudion.
Stockholm based pianist Daniel Westin has been heard in experimental indie band Humfree Bug Art and later live with Stockholm duo Grapell, both recorded on the Swedish label Strangers Candy.
Now Daniel Westin debuts with his own instrumental piano quartet, creating melodic Scandinavian soundscapes on the album Notes. The music moves in a melancholy and barren landscape, nevertheless without optimism. The music speaks of hope for a better world, balanced by equal parts sadness and darkness. Daniel Westin Quartet makes pop music, but in a jazz costume signed producer Åke Linton.
These are honest songs created in the moment, and with playfulness as a motto. I come from a background of classical music and jazz, and that is a part of me, but also something I wanted to break out from by making this record.
Notes is about striving against your own medium, and I have always strived for simplicity. What is not being played is as important as what is being played, if not more, says Daniel Westin about the album.
