London - Leila Adu, the London born songwriter/free improv singing sensation, comes home to the UK's cutting-edge hot spot, Vortex Jazz Bar. She will be working with her trio Leila Adu & the Don'ts on August, 3rd at 8pm in a special performance to celebrate the world premiere of her new video for the song Dark Joan."
Dark Joan" is the title song of Leila Adu's recent album produced by the legendary Steve Albini. Directed by award winning New Zealand director, Stephen Bain, the"Dark Joan" video features Leila as Joan of Arc along with an army of girls in creative cardboard armour. The musical performances feature Leila Adu on vocals/grand piano along with veterans of the London improv/jazz/punk scene, John Edwards (double bass) and Steve Noble (drums). Leila Adu will additionally perform with her Italian drummer/percussionist, De Santis. The night of music is rounded out wonderfully with a rare solo piano improv performance by Steve Beresford, one of London's top improvisers (Toop, Zorn & the Slit).
Time out has sited the performance as a Critics Choice saying Precociously talented Polly Harvey-esque New Zealand vocalist Adu (whose latest solo album has been produced by Steve Albini), has been described as a 'Nina Simone for the Noughties', and she certainly has a similar melancholic power to her voice."
Leila Adu is internationally recognized for her solo piano/vocal sets and composing/performing for symphony orchestra. This special night promises the intense musical excitement that only seasoned songwriters and improvisors can provide.
