New York Festival Of Song (NYFOS), whose recent program, “Fugitives," was acclaimed as Profoundly moving, (New York Times) and Extraordinary what we want all concerts to be, (Howard Kissel, New York Daily News) presents its fourth annual program with The Juilliard School on January 14, 2009 at 8 PM, NYFOS@Juilliard: Latin Lovers.
This collaboration between NYFOS and The Juilliard School celebrates the creative energy and superlative vocal talent of tomorrows brightest stars, building on NYFOSs distinctive programming and performing style. Alumni of the joint program have already begun to participate in NYFOSs mainstage concerts alongside our more seasoned artists, while also taking their place in opera houses and concert halls around the world.
“Latin Lovers" celebrates the sensuous, harmonically rich art songs, theater songs, and dance music of Argentina, Brazil, Cuba and Uruguay, including music by such jazz-oriented composers as Astor Piazzolla, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Pixinguinha ("Grandfather of Brazilian Jazz") and many others. “Latin Lovers" will feature NYFOS Artistic Director Steven Blier as pianist-arranger and host.
“Latin Lovers" will be performed at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater at Juilliard, 65th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenues. Tickets are free and will be available in person only at the Juilliard Box Office beginning January 5.
The cast of “Latin Lovers" includes Meredith Lustig, soprano; Jennifer Zetlan, soprano; Rebecca Jo Loeb, mezzo-soprano; Isabel Vera Rodriguez, mezzo-soprano; Paul Appleby, tenor; Christopher Tiesi, tenor; Carlton Ford, baritone; Adrian Rosas, bass-baritone; Eric Roberts, percussionist; Joo Kouyoumdjian, guitarist; Jeanne Slater, choreographer; and Steven Blier, pianist-arranger/host. New York Festival of Song was founded in 1988 by Steven Blier and Michael Barrett. NYFOS is dedicated to creating intimate song concerts of great beauty, humor and originality, combining music, poetry, and history to entertain, educate and create community among audiences and performers. With a far-ranging repertoire of art songs, concert works and theater pieces, its thematic recitals have included programs from Brahms to the Beatles, from the nineteenth-century salons of Paris to Tin Pan Alley, from Russian art song to Argentine tangos, from sixteenth-century lute songs to new music. NYFOS particularly celebrates American song literature and culture, and specializes in premiering and commissioning new American works.
