Canadian jazz vocalist/lyricist/composer Angela Verbrugge's new release follows her debut by again ranking in my twenty-five most memorable jazz albums of the year. It would not be surprising if some of her originals become standards in the future.

Victoria, BC based, Angela Verbrugge , returns to London’s award-winning jazz club, Pizza Express Live, on June 3 and 4 for a back-to-back engagement accompanied by acclaimed New York City jazz pianist Ray Gallon, and jazz veterans Irish-born/Spain-based drummer Stephen Keogh and London-bassist Mark Hodgson.

Verbrugge, an emerging artist, worked hard during the pandemic to create new material and prepare to record it. In 2021, Verbrugge leapt back into live performance and she sold out her debut Pizza Express show in October 2021 to eager jazz fans after pandemic restrictions eased.

A winner of the Best Female Jazz Vocalist in the 2020 JazzTimes Readers Poll, Verbrugge beat out notable jazz singers including fellow Canadian superstar Diana Krall. Her vocal recordings feature her original lyrics and songwriting inspired by the Great American Songbook and composers like Cole Porter, Gershwin, Irving Berlin and Dave Frishberg. Critics have described her music as “quirky with a swing” (Jazz Weekly) and “conspicuously good taste” (JazzTimes).

Verbrugge recorded and released her sophomore album, Love for Connoisseurs in 2022 resulting in a breakout year for this rising jazz artist! The project received rave reviews for Verbrugge as a recording artist, composer, lyricist and self-producer from leading jazz publications and blogs including JazzTimes USA, JazzWise UK, Jersey Jazz Magazine (NJ), JazzWax (blog by WSJ journalist), LA Jazz Scene (article by Downbeat reviewer and acclaimed music author Scott Yanow), Couleurs Jazz Magazine (France), as well as many other important jazz podcasts and blogs internationally.

In March, Verbrugge was invited by The Embassy of Canada to Tokyo to perform a concert in celebration of International Women's Day where she performed with some of the top female jazz musicians in Japan for an audience of 200 journalists, dignitaries, music industry and VIPS.

For her June 3 and 4, 2023 performance at Pizza Express Live at the Soho stage, Verbrugge will be in exemplary company with pianist Gallon who is getting set to release his second recording as a leader featuring bassist Ron Carter and Lewis Nash. Gallon has a forty-year career performing with a who’s who of artists active on the New York scene, and touring and accompanying with musicians such as Lionel Hampton, Art Farmer, Benny Golson, Jin Hendricks and Chaka Khan. Verbrugge enlisted bassist Mark Hodgson (The Police, Jamie Cullum, Phil Woods, Cedar Walton), and drummer Stephen Keogh (Bill Charlap, James Moody, Brad Mehldau, Herb Ellis).

A musician truly dedicated to the art of jazz singing and songwriting, Verbrugge has overcome multiple personal challenges including three near-death experiences. She’s forged her own musical path by playing with world-class musicians around the globe, bringing her unique repertoire to life. “It strikes me that wherever I go, the human experience is about adventures, love found, love sustained, love lost, and all the bumps in the road along the way.”

“No maybes; for Verbrugge, now is definitely the time.” —Andrew Gilbert, JazzTimes Magazine.

“On many occasions, Mr. Gallon has performed and toured with me as part of my Quartet, Quintet, and Nonet. We have performed in clubs as a duo, we've been sidemen together, and we've been involved in recording sessions. Mr. Gallon is a very fine pianist who is not only a wonderful jazz player, but also a gifted accompanist. His versatility and knowledge of the tradition have allowed him to work with a diverse group of bandleaders including Lionel Hampton, Art Farmer, Les Paul, Grady Tate, Gloria Lynne and T.S. Monk. I often recommend Ray to other artists in need of a pianist.” —Ron Carter, the Grammy-Award winning most recorded jazz bassist in history (over 2000 records); member Miles Davis Quintet
