Jazz on the Lawn at the Santa Monica City Hall
A free summer jazz and world music series on the lawn of the Santa Monica City Hall. Sundays Aug 16, 23rd and 30th.

The City of Santa Monica Cultural Affairs Division announces the 4th annual free Jazz on the Lawn series at City Hall. With room for a picnic on the front lawn of Santa Monica City Hall and fresh breezes from the beach nearby, Jazz on the Lawn is the place to be for four Sundays from 5-7pm starting August 9th. The series features free jazz and world music performances from hot talent and future stars.

August 16 Grupo Falso Baiano
This hot young ensemble performs choro, a musical form created by blending African rhythms with the structures of classical music. Dating from the 19th century, choro has evolved into many forms including the samba while retaining its daring improvisation, highly sophisticated counterpoint, and syncopated Afro-Brazilian rhythms. Listen to mandolin, 7 string guitar, reeds and percussion create the true incarnation of Brazilian soul.

August 23rd Double G
Composer, saxophonist, and impresario Geoff “Double G" Gallegos has pioneered a musical fusion of jazz, classical, and hip-hop that has delighted both fans and critics alike. Known for his leadership of local favorite the DAKAH hip-hop orchestra, he has played to capacity crowds at Disney Hall, Royce Hall, The House of Blues, the South By Southwest Music Festival, New Orleans Jazzfest and the 2005 Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl among others. Come help shape the evolution of a new sonic consciousness with Gallegos as he continues to challenge musical conventions.

August 30th John West
Fresh from selling out the Roxy, Louisiana native John West will arrive in Santa Monica fresh from triumphant performances in New York and London. This talented singer-songwriter creates soul without crooning, R&B without formula and pop without gloss. His musical influences range from Otis Redding, Cat Stevens, Jill Scott, and Jack Johnson, and fold together jazz and soul with a bluesy undercurrent. Catch this rising young star on the intimate Jazz on the Lawn stage while you can!

STACEY EARLE & MARK STUART
“Hardcore Troubadour" is one of her brother's most popular songs, but the moniker could easily apply to Stacey Earle, who, along with husband Mark Stuart, averages 200 gigs a year. The couple's live shows are their trademark, and this will be your last chance to see them as they criss-cross the country one last time before hangin' it up. Expect great songs, expert story telling, laugh-out-loud musings, and an evening where you most likely will be singing along right with them. Great!

Now in its fourth year, JAZZPop returns to the Hammer courtyard for three Thursdays of jazz without boundaries. Veteran artists and bold new voices present a series of free performances of original, adventurous music that combines inventive composition with improvisational prowess and propulsive groove. JAZZPOP draws on influences as far-ranging as jagged noise rock, impressionistic electric jazz, moody country blues and gutbucket soul, to re-imagine jazz as a music of our contemporary moment.

Lighthouse Cafe
30 Pier Ave., Hermosa Beach

www.thelighthousecafe.com

Since the 1940's, The Lighthouse Cafe located on Pier Plaza in Hermosa Beach, has been a haven for musicians and music lovers alike. The venue first gained popularity with the world renown jazz jam group “The Lighthouse All-Stars" called the club home. For years SoCal residents swarmed to the South Bay to take part in the west coast jazz movement and to see the talents of greats such as Buddy Guy, Miles Davis, Howard Rumsey, Chet Baker, and Shorty Rodgers swing every Sunday afternoon for Jazz Brunch, a tradition that continues today.

As the Los Angeles music scene evolved and became one of the most important in the world, so did the Lighthouse Cafe. It remains a laid back joint where the best of the pros and local up and comers from all music genres come to play. In a week you can hear the best in Jazz, Rock, Reggae, Blues, Classic and even Karaoke. This is a not to be missed experience in the South Bay.
