This week's Riverwalk Jazz features holiday favorites performed by the The Jim Cullum Jazz Band and special guests, along with excerpts from Louis Armstrong’s historic reading of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas." Break out the ornaments and turn up the volume. Riverwalk Jazz puts listeners in the mood for trimming the tree, stuffing stockings and sharing the holiday spirit.

The program is distributed in the US by Public Radio International, on Sirius/XM satellite radio and can be streamed on-demand from the Riverwalk Jazz website. You can also drop in on a continuous stream of shows at the Stanford Archive of Recorded Sound.

Along the way, The Jim Cullum Jazz Band presents a set of holiday sing-along carols from “We Three Kings” to “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.” Jazz piano legend Dick Hyman joins the band with his improvisation, ”Jingle Bells Swing.” Reedman Bob Wilber offers a playful reminder that ”Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town.” Band pianist John Sheridan gets a standing ovation with ”Nutcracker Rag,” a spectacular solo stride-piano interpretation of the ”Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies” from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker. Vocalist Rebecca Kilgore stops by with Irving Berlin’s ”I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm,” and Jim and the band perform the Bob Crosby band classic, ”Skater’s Waltz in Swingtime.”

As Louis Armstrong said “A very happy Christmas, and that goes from Satchmo, too!"
