Free Outdoor Concerts Showcase Music from the Caribbean, Latin America and New Orleans

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Fulton Mall Improvement Association (FMIA) hosts its second year of free, outdoor concerts at Albee Square in Downtown Brooklyn. The series premieres July 7 with music from Latin America, featuring Quimbombo and Willie Villegas y Entre Amigos. The August 18 concert brings music from New Orleans to Fulton Street Mall, featuring the Jambalaya Brass Band and the Dixie Rascals. The series ends September 8 with a Caribbean-themed concert, featuring Impack2 and The Request Band.

Last year, the concerts attracted hundreds of concert-goers who flocked to hear the music and provided a pleasant backdrop for the thousands of shoppers making their way through the various stores in the Mall. With over 100,000 visitors each day, Fulton Street Mall is the third busiest shopping district in the city and serves as a primary shopping destination and critical link for commuters, visitors and residents.

“The concerts have been a great success. Families from Park Slope, couples from Bushwick, students from LIU and tourists from abroad all came to enjoy the music. Fulton Street Mall is more than a shopping district; it's a community... and a growing one at that. We recognized the importance of having an event that everyone would enjoy," said FMIA Executive Director Michael Weiss.

With over 35,000 new residents expected to move into Downtown Brooklyn in the next few years, and many of the district's main thoroughfares slated for major enhancements, Downtown Brooklyn is burgeoning with new energy and excitement.

Fulton Street Beat celebrates Downtown Brooklyn's musical history, from its concentration of venues that showcased jazz greats such as Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and John Coltrane, to its inspiration for Hip-Hop icons like Jay-Z, Biz Markie, and the Notorious B.I.G.

Concerts will be held from 1:00 PM until 4:30 PM at Albee Square on DeKalb Avenue between Flatbush Avenue and Albee Square West.

Fulton Street Beat is made possible, in part, with the support of North Fork Bank and its media sponsor, WNYC. The concert series is hosted and produced by the FMIA, with technical assistance by Kennedy Events Services, Inc.

The FMIA is the first special assessment district of any kind in New York City and strives to provide a clean, safe and vibrant place to shop, work, live, and visit. Please note that the concerts will take place rain or shine and the aforementioned programs are subject to change. For additional information, call the FMIA at 718-403-1632 or visit www.fultonstreet.org.
