CREATING A FUTURE FOR OUR PAST...New web presence bodes well for American music preservation

Aptos, CA — Visitors to greatamericansongbook.org will notice a fresh look these days, full of facts about composers, lyricists and singers who contributed to this original, precious and uniquely American treasure trove of music. The American Songbook Preservation Society is debuting a fresh new website as part of their ongoing campaign to preserve our cultural treasure known as the Great American Songbook.

The Great American Songbook is a body of music that is lauded the world over for representing the zenith of American culture and songwriting at its best. And it has never before been so important to take action to preserve and restore this vital cultural resource and access to it. With vinyl and compact disc recordings quickly becoming a distant memory, record stores disappearing and live performance dwindling, there is a very real danger that this music will be lost to future generations. Perhaps Tony Bennett put it best when he said, “This is America’s classical music.”

This new website is just a precursor to a comprehensive educational website devoted to the preservation of the composers, lyricists, songs, shows and singers representing the collective body of work known as the Great American Songbook. Through the use of digitalized text, photos, sound and film to keep this truly American musical legacy in front of the public for the next 100 years and beyond, American Songbook Preservation Society looks forward to disseminating information and educational materials free to the public as a destination on the world wide web.

Our project will expand on the depth, breadth, and accuracy of the information and material found at such websites as Wikipedia with an enhanced visual presentation in the construction and design of the website along with the addition of more text, photographs and the inclusion of sound and film. This dynamic web portal will evolve and expand over time as more content of this nature enters the realm of public domain. The uniqueness and completeness of this website as developed will become a destination for those interested in learning about this truly American cultural treasure and legacy.
