El Portal: New Trophy

E' nello scenario dello "Young Jazz Festival" di Foligno che ufficialmente viene presentato il disco d'esordio di questa giovane band americana che intraprende un ambizioso viaggio alla ricerca dell'originalità.

Il punto di partenza sono le dieci composizioni del sassofonista Nolan Lem ed è proprio il suo immaginario ad influenzare in modo significativo l'intero percorso musicale.

La scaletta si apre con "Vortex" dove l'elemento principale è il sassofono, il suono delicato di Lem si miscela con il sottofondo dei partners in un interplay sofisticato e fluente.

In "New Trophy" è una pulsazione frazionata e regolare ad accompagnare le prime battute, un crescendo d'intensità che porta Lem ad esporre prima il tema e poi a lanciare il suo assolo accompagnato nell'ombra dal Fender Rodes con il quale costruisce un dialogo intermittente ed un contrasto estemporaneo tra i veloci fraseggi di sax e le più ordinate e pacifiche note del rhodes.

Poi è "Hysteresis" ad attirare l'attenzione, il sax espone la prima parte del tema chiudendo il suo percorso nel battito di Keith Kerr e Joe Rehmer che scandisce un tempo costante ed ordinato che sarà la base d'appoggio su cui prima Bedal e poi Lem lasceranno cadere lentamente le loro note in una suggestiva interpretazione.

Anche se a tratti acerbo e ripetitivo, New Trophy si discosta positivamente dai soliti stereotipi musicali di orientamento jazzistico ed ha permesso agli El Portal di raccontare la loro prima storia, che è solo l'inizio di un pensiero musicale ancora in parte da decifrare.
