Big Band Italia: Blue Sun

Read "Blue Sun" reviewed by Nicholas F. Mondello

Big Band Italia's “Blue Sun" is intriguing listening. Saxophonist/co-leader Gianni Bardaro's tune could best be described as a modernised Oliver Nelson track exploding on steroids. Bruno Luise's arrangement is complex and challenging in terms of time signature and textures and it is performed superbly by this cadre of Italy's foremost jazz musicians--with guest artists trumpeter Randy Brecker and guitarist Ciro Manna lending fine solos. The tune's melody moves in sophisticated, angular intervals and dominating triplet figures. The ...

Andrea Tofanelli & The Trumpet Show Band: Vulcano

Read "Vulcano" reviewed by Nicholas F. Mondello

In the Tyrrhenian Sea, just north of Sicily sits the tiny island of Vulcano, the mythological chimney of the Roman god of fire, Vulcan. While Italian trumpeter, Andrea Tofanelli may or may not be paying pay tribute to Vulcan or his eponymous isle, with Vulcano he's gathered some of Italy's top players to deliver 10 explosive tracks of screaming trumpet, killer ensemble, and A-1 solo playing. “Adagio," taken from the Luis Bacalov-composed and the New Trolls-performed “Concerto Grosso," ...

Ethan Iverson & Umbria Jazz Orchestra: Bud Powell in the 21st Century

Read "Bud Powell in the 21st Century" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

César Cardoso: Dice of Tenors

Read "Dice of Tenors" reviewed by Hrayr Attarian

The captivating and cinematic Dice of Tenors is Portugese saxophonist César Cardoso's fourth release as a leader. Cardoso has brought together an international octet of accomplished musicians for an eight track tribute to six saxophone giants including John Coltrane, Hank Mobley, and Benny Golson. In addition to six standards either penned or popularized by these legendary tenorists, there are two Cardoso originals which are in the same spirit as the covers. Cardoso's haunting “Rafaela" is constructed out of ...

Marcello Rosa: The World on a Slide

Read "The World on a Slide" reviewed by Maurizio Zerbo

César Cardoso: Dice of Tenors

Cesar Cardoso: Dice of Tenors

Read "Dice of Tenors" reviewed by Jack Bowers

Dice of Tenors is Portuguese-bred tenor saxophonist Cesar Cardoso's ardent salute to a half-dozen of the world's foremost tenor saxophone masters: Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane, Hank Mobley, Joe Henderson and Benny Golson. To carry out that purpose, Cardoso has convened an admirable octet on which he shares the front line with trumpeter Jason Palmer, alto Miguel Zenon, trombonist Massimo Morganti and vibraphonist Jeffery Davis. The group's hard-working rhythm section consists of pianist Oscar Graca, bassist Demian Cabaud and ...
