Adam Cruz: Milestone
Per i veri artisti un'incisione discografica è il frutto di urgenza espressiva, non di promozione autoreferenziale. In questa ristretta schiera rientra il batterista e percussionista Adam Cruz, da almeno vent'anni in auge sulla scena jazzistica statunitense in veste di eclettico e prezioso sideman.

Ora è venuto il momento della primo disco da leader, per estendere alla sfera compositiva il suo drumming duttile e ben articolato. Colpisce prima di tutto la varietà nella disposizione timbrica del tappeto sonoro, che sin dall'iniziale "Secret Life" pone al centro dell'attenzione strumenti diversi. Si parte con pianoforte e batteria per inaugurare un percorso ricco di contrasti dinamici, che mette in evidenza gli scambi tra un sax (alto, tenore, soprano) e pianoforte.

Superbe le prove di Chris Potter e Miguel Zenon, dall'alto di una ragguardevole espressività del suono e un eloquio poderoso quanto brillante. Oltre che sui superbi giochi solistici, l'accento è posto sulle timbriche e su uno sfolgorante uso dei colori musicali. È un disegno sonoro che fluttua liberamente su vari registri, con un fantasioso gioco di scambi e rilanci tra i vari musicisti.

Nell'insieme, Milestone è uno dei lavori più riusciti e caratterizzati dell'odierno panorama jazzistico, dove l'energia e la libertà espressiva del leader danno vita ad una strutturazione ben equilibrata ed organizzata delle trame musicali. Palpabile appare il coinvolgimento dei compagni di viaggio, per imprimere al disco tutta la loro maestria artistica.
