Dave Stryker: Messin' with Mister T
Il "Mister T" del titolo è Stanley Turrentine, il sax tenore scomparso quindici anni fa che ha rappresentato uno dei musicisti più influenti nella carriera di Dave Stryker. Il chitarrista ha collaborato con Turrentine per oltre un decennio e ora lo celebra ospitando dieci eminenti tenoristi contemporanei. L'organico base è il classico organ trio che l'ha visto debuttare giovanissimo accanto a Jack McDuff, e che da anni si colloca ai vertici delle preferenze di Stryker: con lui troviamo quindi l'ottimo Jared Gold all'hammond B3, organista d'intenso groove e decennale partner del chitarrista.

"Jack McDuff era solito ripetermi -ricorda Styker-Presta attenzione a come si comporta le persone del pubblico. Se vedi che non muovono il capo vuol dire che stai facendo qualcosa di sbagliato. (...) Non potevi suonare con lui o con Stanley se non riuscivi a swingare. Dovevi suonare con fuoco, passione e del buon ritmo altrimenti non saresti durato più di due settimane." Lo stile del chitarrista si lega a quelli di Grant Green e Wes Montgomery ed è fortemente intriso di blues: in questo disco celebrativo ospita i sassofonisti più affini al suo stile ed al modello reso popolare dai dischi Blue Note degli anni cinquanta e sessanta. L'onore di "aprire le danze" è affidato all'ottantenne Houston Person, uno dei veterani del soul jazz con un brano dal preciso valore simbolico, "La Place Street." Questi è stato l'ultimo pezzo suonato da Turrentine nella sua ultima scrittura al Blue Note, il 9 settembre 2000, tre giorni prima di morire.

Il repertorio spazia da temi serrati e funky ad altri moderati ("Pieces of Dreams") fino all'immancabile ballad ("In a Sentimental Mood" con l'altro veterano Jimmy Heath). Il percorso si snoda all'insegna del groove con pieno rispetto per i modelli storici, in una sequenza di vorticosi assoli e ritmi contagiosi. Tra i brani migliori c'è la lunga versione del coltraniano "Impressions" eseguita da un appassionante Chris Potter, con ottimi assoli di Stryker, Gold e un incisivo finale chitarra/sax. Altri momenti ricchi di tensione sono "Gibraltar," con Bob Mintzer e "Side Stepping" con un altro collaboratore consolidato di Stryker, Steve Slagle, ma ogni brano ha la sua attrattiva e riesce a colpire. Un disco pienamente riuscito dunque, con musica radicata nella tradizione ma ancora viva e di forte impatto.
