About Me

Tobias Klein (*Saarbrücken, Germany, 1967) moved to Amsterdam in 1990. He studied saxophone with Jasper Blom and bass clarinet with Harry Sparnaay at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. As a performing musician, he specializes in the alto saxophone and the low clarinets (bass and contra bass). His focus lies mainly on improvised music and contemporary jazz. He incorporates elements of contemporary composed music and techniques derived from African, Eastern European and Asian music. Tobias currently leads the groups Spinifex and Almeida/Duynhoven/Klein. He regularly performs in duo with clarinetist Oguz Büyükberber and he is currently part of the Boi Akih project Liquid Songs. Tobias Klein frequently composes for both contemporary jazz groups and chamber music ensembles. In 2010, he was awarded the North Sea Jazz Composition Commission. In 2015, his piece Too Dark To Read for 10 bass clarinets was performed at the International Clarinet Association's Clarinet Fest at Madrid. Tobias Klein's work has appeared on more than 25 CDs and he has toured extensively in Europe and Asia. www.tobiasklein.nl http://saxofoonles.amsterdam
