Dan Berg, tastierista e compositore nativo di Brooklyn, è stato allievo di Marty Erlich. Non c'è quindi da stupirsi se una particolare attenzione all'aspetto compositivo, alla rigorosità e profondità dell'approccio strumentale e soprattutto una mente aperta e senza preconcetti, siano divenuti elementi imprescindibili nel bagaglio artistico del giovane allievo. E ciò emerge a chiare lettere in Manifesto album di debutto licenziato con il suo gruppo Gestalt e autoprodotto.

Tintinnare di campanellini, un celestiale vocalizzo di Kristin Young, il ritmo binario di Pat Agresta, il pulsare del basso elettrico di Matt Wigston, la melodica del leader intrisa di country e folk, il guizzante sax alto di Jessica Lurie e Manifesto prende avvio, in un riuscito amalgama strumentale e di generi che sarà la cifra stilistica dell'intero album. Il seguente " Why Is a Crooked Letter" sembra arrivare direttamente dagli anni ottanta, quelli della fusion imperante, qui ripresa elegantemente, spogliata dai suoi eccessi e rivestita della sofisticata eleganza che solo un grande arrangiatore è in grado di fornire.

"Relish," dominata dal Rhodes del leader, è uno slow tempo tipicamente downtown, percorso da fremiti e spigolature metropolitane. Qua e là qualche pennellata di moog sembra riportare indietro nel tempo l'incisione ma la sensibilità del leader nel controllare le sue tastiere, elettroniche o acustiche che siano, trasforma il rischio di datare eccessivamente l'album in una importante, curiosa risorsa a disposizione. "Vibrant Phases" è un dialogo quasi surreale tra la voce da soprano di Kristin Young e il Rhodes di Berg. Manifesto si chiude con "Magnetisma" un lungo piano solo nel quale un accenno di ritmi cubani defluisce in una ballad morbida, delicata, commovente.
