New Ghost: Live Upstairs at Nick's

A giudicare dalle foto di copertina parrebbe di essere in presenza di un gruppo fusion o prog-rock degli anni ’70/80. Invece Live Upstairs at Nick’s è la registrazione, datata gennaio 1998, di un quartetto di improvvisatori che dichiarano il loro amore per artisti come Cecil Taylor, Marshall Allen, Linda Sharrock etc.

Anche se la musica dei New Ghost, più che ai citati mentori o all’Albert Ayler evocato dal nome del gruppo, sembra vicina ai gruppi elettrici di Ornette Coleman con basso e chitarra in grande evidenza. Aggiungiamo pure che in qualche brano, l’iniziale “Subterranean-Phil-Holy-Feast-of All“ per esempio, il fantasma di Frank Zappa diventa quasi tangibile presenza e i giochi sono fatti.

Elliott Levin, ottimo sassofonista di scuola free, si diverte a mischiare le carte, inserendo spezzoni di voce recitante per dare spazio alla propria vena poetica (ha pubblicato vari libri di componimenti in versi). Rick Iannacone declina la sua chitarra elettrica in cangianti sonorità che spaziano dal free-funk ai più morbidi bagliori fusion. I fratelli John e Steve Testa assicurano una propulsione forse un po’ greve ma efficace.

Live Upstairs at Nick’s è disco eccentrico che patisce un poco le scorie del tempo, ma contiene momenti di ottima musica e risulta complessivamente gradevole.
