Grand Reportage Ensemble Deluxe and Lucien Dubuis: Live from the Surface of the Sun

Grand Reportage Ensemble (nome altisonante) è un trio costituito dal sassofonista Jerome Correa che occasionalmente si trasforma in quartetto grazie all'invito di ospiti prestigiosi, cambiando in queste occasioni denominazione in Grand Reportage Ensemble Deluxe (nome ancor più altisonante). Ma la musica presentata in Live from the Surface of the Sun è tutt'altro che pomposa e stucchevole. Registrato durante una settimana di scrittura presso il Café du Soleil in Saignelegier, il disco è sostanzialmente un live senza pubblico registrato in presa diretta nelle condizioni tecniche di un vero e proprio studio.

Il risultato è un'ora di musica vivida, fremente, a tratti esplosiva, spontanea, pertinente, lucida, avventurosa. Quando a prevalere (per la maggior parte) sono gli strumenti gravi - contrabbasso, sax baritono del leader e clarinetto basso dell'ospite Lucien Dubuis - la musica spicca il volo per la capacità di trasformare le frequenze basse in qualcosa di fremente e indefinibile, con largo uso dell'improvvisazione collettiva, ampie sezioni dal groove quasi funky, ritmi binari complessi e grandi scomposizioni ritmiche.

Assai gradevoli anche i momenti in cui i quattro musicisti combinano la componente melodica con la ricerca timbrica portando l'atmosfera verso una musica da camera moderna che gioca con l'avanguardia. Fino ad arrivare al gioiello di "Le vent de l'affaire," un duo tra Correa e Dubuis nel quale tutte queste componenti si sublimano, regalandoci poco più di tre minuti di prelibatezze e invenzioni che nobilitano due strumenti rigidi e spesso sottovalutati come il sax baritono e il clarinetto basso.
