The Lou Grassi Po Band with Marshall Allen: Live at the Knitting Factory Volume 1

Il sax contralto e il flauto di Marshall Allen, la tromba di Paul Smoker, il trombone di Steve Swell e il clarinetto di Perry Robinson. Tutti insieme appassionatamente, la sera del 26 settembre 2000, sul palco della Knitting Factory di New York. Al contrabbasso Wilber Morris; alla batteria Lou Grassi, titolare del progetto Po Band, creatura mutante che da una quindicina d'anni abita il sottobosco free della Grande Mela; una sorta di laboratorio permanente di improvvisazione nella cui fila sono transitati, tra gli altri, Joseph Jarman, John Tchicai, Herb Robertson, Adam Lane e Burton Greene.

Come si conviene a una line-up tanto agguerrita, l'ora e cinque secondi di musica - messa in commercio dalla Porter Records - è all'insegna degli eroici furori. L'impatto del sestetto è notevole. Le tre lunghe improvvisazioni, delle quali soltanto la terza presenta un'esile traccia scritta, sono il veicolo per una serie di assoli brucianti e rabbiosi, ad altissimo tasso energetico. Notevole la verve abrasiva dell'eterno Marshall Allen, il più esposto dei quattro fiati, anche se le cose migliori le regala la tromba arroventata del mai meno che ottimo Paul Smoker.

Spunti e intuizioni non mancano, ma, inevitabilmente, la forza d'urto della band non può essere restituita fedelmente dal medium disco. È una questione fisiologica. Quel che dal vivo entusiasma e travolge, in un lettore CD rischia di annoiare.

Tra la poltrona di casa e un posto in prima fila alla Knitting Factory c'è una bella differenza.
