Sono otto gli standard e due le composizioni originali di questa ottima incisione del ’93, firmata dall’inedito duo Mulligan/Taylor. Incontri come questo, all’insegna del bel suonare, imperversano da sempre nei festival e nella produzione discografica.

A rendere interessante l’ascolto del disco è la classe immensa del magnifico baritonista. È una vera goduria per il fortunato acquirente del CD ascoltare il suo fraseggio sciolto e rilassato nelle ennesime rivisitazioni di temi immortali quali “Stompin’ at Savoy”, “Come Sunday” e “Body and Soul”.

Leggerezza, empatia, fluido swing, note lunghe e variamente articolate. Sono le linee guida di questa pregevolissima performance di un Mulligan ispirato ed in forma, per stravolgere e rivolgere all'infinito i brani proposti in un crescendo improvvisativo di notevole impatto.

Brani come “All The Things You Are” sono sempre stati un must interpretativo per intere generazioni di jazzisti e quindi triti e ritriti al pubblico. Eppure grazie alla fantasia interpretativa del baritonista nel variare la melodia, il brano volta alto oltre il deja vù su vette nuove. Note di pura bellezza per assumere la forma di una lanterna magica, per distillare tutta la bellezza ed il fascino del jazz.

Solo ai grandi è dato fare quello che qui fa Mulligan: il ridefinire per l’occasione la densità, la sostanza e la forma dei brani, imprimendovi un marchio originale ed inconfondibile. Una prova saettante la sua: leggera, agile, piena di inventiva. In più la classe arcinota, che insieme alla souplesse interpretativa, rende quest’opera meritevole di essere segnalata all’attenzione dei nostri lettori.
