La pianista americana Lee Shaw, ormai ultraottantenne, ha svolto meritoria attività musicale anche come educatrice (uno dei suoi allievi più famosi è l'eccellente ed eclettico John Medeski) e ogni tanto pubblica qualche album in pieno stile mainstream che però non si fa mancare escursioni avventurose (come per esempio in questo caso con la rilettura corposa di "Turnaround" di Ornette Coleman).

L'occasione per la registrazione di questo disco è data da un ingaggio europeo in Germania con il suo trio che, per l'occasione, viene integrato da i saxofonisti Johannes Enders e Michael Lutzeier che si alternano nelle due serate fra fine maggio e e inizi giugno del 2009, senza mai incorciarsi. Uno dei brani, registrato il 31 maggio, vede il trio senza ospiti alle prese con un brano di Leonard Bernstein.

Dei due saxofonisti Michael Lutzeier sembra quello più solido e formato, con il suo sax baritono impetuoso e carico di forza espressiva. Il sax tenore di Johannes Enders è più rilassato ed elegante e, soprattutto in "Turnaround," mostra belle idee e solida tecnica.

Lee Shaw conferma di avere solida tecnica e belle idee. Si intende alla perfezione con la sezione ritmica ben collaudata e la musica corre fluida ed espressiva. Una occasione preziosa per valorizzare un'artista che è rimasta spesso nell'ombra ma che ha storie interessanti da raccontare.
