Johnny Coles: Little Johnny C
Scavando in queste session del 1963, troviamo un solista di tromba squisito, dal racconto ellittico, ammiccante.

Il sound è fine, quasi vaporoso, ma non manca di carattere.

E’ sulla linea del Miles anni '50, quasi ansioso di liberarsi di quel fascino che attanagliava tutti i trombettisti di introspettivo lirismo.

D’altra parte, Coles aveva contribuito alle trame di Sketches of Spain e Porgy and Bess, picchi poetici di Davis e Gil Evans.

E accanto a Evans aveva avuto i suoi momenti in molte sequenze di Out of the Cool (in seguito avrebbe anche condiviso il palco con Mingus, nella celebre tournèe europea del 1964).

Quelle di Little Johnny C sono musiche che si apprezzano con maggior lucidità adesso, con il distacco storico.

Perché allora, nel ’63, talmente creativo e tumultuoso era il mondo del jazz, che le consuete sedute Blue Note potevano passare inosservate, o comunque di un conservatorismo inutile.

Invece questo repertorio approntato per l’occasione dal pianista Duke Pearson, buon amico di Johnny, possiede una fragranza soul di deliziosa gradevolezza e offre come detto assoli brillanti di Coles, ma anche interventi impeccabili di Joe Henderson e Leo Wright.

Certo, il terreno è già perlustrato, le sorprese sono poche, ma ciò non toglie la validità universale della formula, mutuata da quella dei Jazz Messengers di Art Blakey.

La ritmica punteggiata di Bob Cranshaw e Walter Perkins (o Pete La Roca) si distende in particolare sulle trame di “Jano”, permettendo ai solisti di svettare.

E il clima non muta di molto con “My Secret Passion”, in cui l’autore Pearson paga tributo anche agli insegnamenti di Horace Silver.

In conclusione, non certo un Blue Note memorabile, ma una testimonianza preziosa dell’arte di Johnny Coles, colto all’interno di un gruppo particolare, anche nell’organico.
