Kirk Knuffke - Jesse Stacken: Like a Tree

Una dozzina di brani usciti dalla penna di Lacy, Coltrane, Hemphill, Bley (Carla), Ayler, Coleman (Ornette), e Mengelberg accomunati da un approccio intimista, profondo, ricco di sfumature ma essenziale. Sono queste le coordinate entro le quali Kirk Knuffke alla cornetta, Jesse Stacken al piano e Kenny Wollesen alla batteria muovono le loro pedine interpretative.

Il pianoforte di Stacken raramente occupa gli spazi, piuttosto controlla la sua endogena ridondanza in favore di una leggerezza un po' naive, ricca di pathos nel suo vagabondare alla ricerca della melodia essenziale. La batteria di Wollesen mostra per gran parte dell'incisione un che di bizzarramente celestiale, fornendo impulsi inconsueti e coloriture che sospingono la musica verso atmosfere di morbido incanto.

E la cornetta di Knuffke soffia note purissime, cavalcando melodie, cogliendone piccoli frammenti per espanderli dal punto di vista timbrico, circuendo il tema principale per sottoporlo ad un processo di progressivo sfoltimento che ne esalta la intrinseca bellezza. A emergere con prepotenza dall'incisione è perciò un idea di suono che al di là della sensibilità interpretativa dei musicisti si rapporta in maniera intelligente e gustosa con composizioni diventate dei classici. Da segnalare "The Painter," brano tratto da Dogon A.D., leggendario album del 1972 di Julius Hemphill, qui magnificamente reso nella sua più dolente cantabilità.
