Lawnmower: Lawnmower II

Lawnmower è un'idea musicale del batterista Luther Gray (Anthony Braxton, Ken Vandermark, Joe McPhee per citare alcune sue frequentazioni) che nel 2010 si concretizzò sulla label portoghese Clean Feed in un'inedita formazione completata da due chitarre elettriche e da un sassofono.

Quattro anni dopo il leader si ripresenta con il fido Jim Hobbs al contralto (Bill Lowe, Taylor Ho Bynum, Joe Morris etc, ) sostituendo le due chitarre con violino e basso elettrico. Così quella miscela di indie-rock e avant-jazz che aveva brillantemente caratterizzato il debutto non solo apre a nuovi orizzonti ritmici e timbrici ma intraprende direzioni espressive inaspettate.

Nell'iniziale "Good Beat" sull'ipnotico, ossessivo bordone creato da batteria e basso elettrico, violino e contralto ricamano linee melodiche dal sapore naive che sarebbero piaciute a Don Cherry. La successiva "Jumping Off the Bridge" è misteriosa, carica di impalpabile tensione verso una conclusione che tarda a concretizzarsi. "Tiny Wings" è sperimentazione minimalista, il violino a solleticare l'iperspazio timbrico per sganciarsi da una situazione di stallo dai toni opprimenti. "Ashed" è una ballad "sui generis," che prende forma lentamente, inquietante e dolce allo stesso tempo. E lo sviluppo dei dodici minuti di "Space Goat" con il violino a cinque corde che suona come il Peter Frampton di "Show Me the Way" mostra come lo spirito della chitarra sia ben presente anche in questo Lawnmower II.
