John Butcher, John Edwards, Mark Sanders: Last Dream at the Morning

Radicalismo improvvisativo duro e puro, per questi tre senatori del ramo, appartenenti alla seconda generazione di musicisti inglesi specializzati nella pratica specifica. Il sassofonismo ispido e acuminato, esplicitamente antigrazioso, di John Butcher (espresso su tenore e soprano, guarda caso) s'ispira palpabilmente a Evan Parker, pontefice massimo in materia (con cui fra l'altro John Edwards ha collaborato di frequente), con suoi i due coéqupiers a interagire in totale souplesse (d'intenti, non climatici).

Certo non tutto è memorabile, come spesso accade in questi frangenti, e tuttavia la chiarezza di eloquio e di orientamento estetico-espressivo rendono il lavoro certamente degno di attenzione, in diversi momenti esemplare, per i motivi di cui sopra, fra segmenti aspri e turbinosi e ripiegamenti verso una sorta di minimalismo a sua volta abbastanza tipico del genere.

Descrivere oltre una musica di tal fatta sarebbe fuorviante nonché sostanzialmente pleonastico: l'immagine è in buona sostanza quella appena fotografata, le sequenze degne di nota non mancano, i momenti in cui i tre sembrano avere per contro bisogno di ricaricare le pile neppure. L'iniziale "Lucid" (titoli lapidari, opportunamente) e "Signal" appaiono i momenti di primo acchito più significativi, così come sezioni intermittenti dell'ampio "Sand Dance."
