Kerry Politzer Quartet: Labyrinth

Labyrinth è il terzo album di Kerry Politzer, giovane pianista e compositrice che gode di una certa popolarità sulle scene newyorkesi, e che esordì come leader nel 2001, con Yearning. Il repertorio del disco si basa prevalentemente sulla samba up tempo, prendendo tuttavia in considerazione le composizioni in tre quarti (come "Falling Through the Cracks"), quelle in cinque (che nel CD sono ben due, "Paloma" e "Hya"), le ballad (ne è un bell’esempio "The End-), e il walking bass in quattro quarti ("Super Ball").

Con un background di studi classici, un diploma al Conservatorio del New England, una menzione d’onore all’International Songwriting Competition e molti altri premi in concorsi vari, la band leader dimostra di saper cogliere suggerimenti provenienti da diverse sfere musicali, fondendoli in una “parlantina” estremamente peculiare e riconoscibile.

Le partiture sono di un certo interesse: spigolose, ritmicamente e armonicamente ardite, cambiano direzione quando meno te l’aspetti, evitando accuratamente la staticità strutturale. La Politzer si fa avanti con un suono grosso, deciso, utilizzando un’itervallistica piuttosto ampia, senza cedere spesso alle facili attrattive del cromatismo. Quello che viene fuori è un disco coinvolgente, per la particolare fattura di alcuni brani, come "Propulsion", e per la vena solistica sui generis.

Anche nell’accompagnamento il piano esce fuori in maniera decisa, a volte destando qualche perplessità. E’ il caso, ad esempio, di quanto succede sulla title-track "Labyrinth", dove le proposte accordali risultano a causa del volume e della fermezza di tocco un tantino invadenti, sovrastando il bell’assolo di sassofono.

Kerry Politzer è certamente tra le voci più interessanti che la giovane scena pianistica statunitense possa offrire, e col tempo non mancherà di stupirci più di quanto abbia già fatto col suo pur riuscitissimo Labyrinth.
