Nate Smith: Kinfolk: Postcards from Everywhere
In aggiunta alla brillante carriera nei gruppi di Dave Holland, Chris Potter, Jose James e molti altri, il quarantaduenne batterista debutta da leader presentando un jazz fresco e immediatamente gradevole ma allo stesso tempo fantasioso negli impasti timbrici e nei ritmi. Un risultato ottenuto grazie alle cantabili composizioni originali (profumate di aromi soul e hip-hop con accattivanti leggerezze pop) e alla presenza di magistrali ospiti come gli stessi Holland e Potter, ma anche di Lionel Loueke e Gretchen Parlato. Il tutto senza dimenticare il contributo del suo gruppo dove spiccano il sassofonista Jaleel Shaw e il pianista Kris Bowers. Alle sorprendenti doti di compositore e arrangiatore, Nate Smith conferma quelle note di batterista propenso alle frammentazioni e alterazioni ritmiche.

Come sottolinea il titolo, il disco è un tributo alle sue radici familiari e riporta due brevi dialoghi di Smith con Mom e Dad ricordando la parentela. Quello che a noi interessa è però la musica che, dicevamo, è eccellente a partire dal brano iniziale "Skip Step," un marcato funk in 17/4 costruito su un metallico vamp e abbellito da molteplici reminiscenze (M-Base, Pat Metheny...).
Stesso groove col successivo "Bounce: parts I & II" che accentua le atmosfere M-Base virando verso l'hip hop e apre nella seconda parte al torrenziale assolo di Chris Potter.

A partire dal terzo brano la musica tende a distentersi, presentando le atmosfere soul e pop che abbiamo detto e altri significativi contributi. Il più avvincente è quello offerto dalla voce di Gretchen Parlato nel nostalgico "Pages" (una gemma di grazia e leggerezza folk) ma anche l'esordiente Amma Whatt offre una bella prova in "Disenchantmet: The Weight" e "Morning and Allison." L'ultimo brano che è doveroso ricordare è "Spinning Down," costruito su una danzante linea di basso in 10/4 di Dave Holland, in relazione alla chitarra di Lionel Loueke, al contralto di Shaw e al piano di Bowers. Il drumming spezzato e interattivo del leader sostiene questo e gli altri brani non ancora citati. Ma una recensione non può diventare un piccolo saggio e lasciamo ai lettori il gusto della scoperta.

Un disco imperdibile.
