I trii con un vibrafono al posto di pianoforte o chitarra non sono mai stati tutta questa gran consuetudine, nel jazz. Per il semplice motivo che non sono mai stati troppo consueti i vibrafonisti, spesso, oltre tutto, impiegati come voce, come timbro, in organici più ampi.

Il quarantottenne svedese Mattias Ståhl, accompagnandosi a un bassista canadese e a un batterista suo connazionale (per quanto di chiare origini "altre"), ha ritenuto opportuno dare il proprio contributo in tema, esperienza del resto già abbracciata anni fa con gli stessi partner in Jag Skulle Bara Gå Ut (Moserobie, 2013). Questo nuovo album, inciso a cavallo fra 2017 e 2018, comprende nove brani medio-brevi (tutti sotto i cinque minuti, anche di un bel po,' per una durata totale di 33'14"), sfoggiando un ottimo suono d'insieme, un bell'interplay e soprattutto tracciati non ripetitivi, ciò che—specie sotto il profilo timbrico—poteva rappresentare un rischio piuttosto concreto. Lo Ståhls Trio sa invece alternare episodi più lineari, formalmente conchiusi, anche cantabili (su tutti, diremmo, "Jealous Guy" di John Lennon), con altri più liberi, avventurosi, sfrangiati, nervosi, talora astratti.

Magari non si tratterà di un capolavoro assoluto, ma questo Källtorp Sessions Volume One (il cui titolo lascia intendere che ci sarà un seguito) è un disco con tutti i puntini sulle i, tutte le tessere al loro posto. Si fa ascoltare con piacere ma in maniera non supina, alchimia che tutto sommato non si verifica neanche poi così di frequente.
