Nico Soffiato Quartet: Just Add Water
Registrato a New York nel dicembre del 2009, questo lavoro del chitarrista padovano Nico Soffiato è la quinta uscita del catalogo dell'etichetta indipendente nBn, la prima non registrata negli studi di Rovereto. E un po' diversa dagli altri è anche la cifra del lavoro, un jazz moderno dinamico e con strutture complesse, aperte a un'improvvisazione che, tuttavia, non è mai estrema.

Il programma vede uno standard e un omaggio a Marc Ducret in mezzo a brani originali, perlopiù di Soffiato. Vi si mette in luce lo stesso chitarrista, che svolge però un lavoro più armonico che da solista, e soprattutto la bella voce di contralto di Nick Videen, capace di solo cangianti nelle frasi e nelle atmosfere. In una musica fortemente dinamica, eccellente il lavoro della sezione ritmica, in particolare del batterista Zach Mangan, pronto a sottolineare i frequenti cambi di scena.

Tra i brani in programma, già l'iniziale "Alexander" permette di apprezzare alcuni dei punti di forza della formazione, mentre "Fanfare" di Ducret sposta la musica su un piano più astratto e lirico, "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning" di Rodgers (condotta in gran parte in trio con un gran lavoro di Mangan) mostra come il gruppo possa rileggere in modo assai originali anche standard, e infine "The Giant" offre una lunga narrazione, che alterna in modo persuasivo momenti di grande intensità ad altri più meditativi.
