Jon Irabagon Trio: It Takes All Kinds

Scegliere come altri vertici di un triangolo due musicisti pieni di storia e esperienza come Mark Helias (contrabbasso) e Barry Altschul (batteria) è una scelta che racconta già da sola molte cose. È la scelta di Jon Irabagon, sassofonista che abbiamo potuto ammirare anche in Italia negli ultimi anni, con i Mostly Other People Do the Killing, nel quintetto di Dave Douglas o in quello di Mary Halvorson.

È una scelta che racconta non soltanto la voglia di dialogare con improvvisatori dotati di una personalità contagiosa e riconoscibile, ma anche quella di soffiare forte sulle braci rossastre della tradizione, una tradizione che, per gradi di separazione che nel jazz sono spesso anche ben meno di sei, porta i segni di Sonny Rollins (il primo disco del trio di Irabagon era tutto giocato intorno al tema di "Doxy"), del trio Air, del Sam Rivers degli anni Settanta, ossia esperienze che sul nucleo fondante del trio senza strumento armonico hanno scolpito progressivamente un lessico di disciplina e libertà, di negoziazione della forma e di indagine dei confini dell'improvvisazione.

Registrato al Festival di Peitz (Germania, ai confini con la Polonia), il trio possiede potenza e fantasia, ritagliandosi momenti di riflessione solitaria in mezzo a rigagnoli spumeggianti di swing ("Cutting Corners") e a piccole aperture lacustri ("Elusive"), oltre che in mezzo alla impattante energia del momento collettivo.

Irabagon sfodera fantasia lungo tutto il concerto, metabolizzando diverse linee stilistiche in un fraseggio nervoso che però non perde mai l'aggancio melodico e ritmico con la terra di cui ama sporcarsi i piedi. È terra fertile, quella della grande tradizione afroamericana. Tesa, contemporanea, un bel concerto che non andrà dimenticato.
