George Colligan: Isolation

Isolation. Isolamento. Quello ispirato a George Colligan da un corso d'insegnamento tenuto in un vecchio castello danese nei paraggi di Copenhagen. Ma anche l'isolamento dell'artista, solo di fronte allo strumento, i suoi pensieri, la sua musica. La musica per l'appunto. Tra le possibili scelte su come affrontare un piano solo Colligan ha optato per la più rischiosa, quella di eseguire composizioni originali, nessuno standard sul quale fare sfoggio delle proprie abilità tecniche, nessun traditional per fare breccia nel cuore del pubblico, nessuna scorciatoia attraverso la via della pop-cover.

Nelle note di copertina Colligan sottolinea come le principali fonti di ispirazione del suo lavoro si trovino nell'arte del pianista catalano Tete Montoliu e in Cedar Walton non tanto con riferimento allo stile pianistico quanto per il loro approccio poco convenzionale al processo creativo del piano solo. Noi aggiungeremmo anche l'ultimo Andrew Hill per quel suo mondo poetico nel quale lo swing e la ricerca del jazz si fondono con la musica classica e quella contemporanea.

Il pianista del Maryland licenzia così un album che sfugge alle classificazioni tipiche del genere, impregnato di lirismo, capace di trasmettere emozioni profonde e intense, nel quale la tecnica sopraffina viene messa al servizio di una espressività raffinata, mai stucchevole. Attraverso la delicatezza di tocco, il dipanarsi inconsueto dell'improvvisazione, una magistrale gestione delle dinamiche, Colligan accompagna l'ascoltatore in un labirinto sonoro che miscela magia e profondità di pensiero.
