Leslie Pintchik: In the Nature of Things
Ancora una volta la pianista statunitense si impone con lucida ed inventiva cifra stilistica. Il suo sestetto non si adagia sulla lezione post-boppistica in stile Blue Note, con il consueto sound rovente ed incalzante. La Leslie Pintchik agisce sapientemente sulla tensione interna delle sue composizioni originali, imprimendo anche ai ritmi più sostenuti una raffinata sensibilità melodica. Quanto alle dinamiche di gruppo, il ruolo dei fiati non si esaurisce nell'alternanza fra enunciazione del tema e l'improvvisazione prevista dai canoni del mainstream.

Tromba e batteria sono chiamati a definire la sostanza compositiva attraverso un elegante gioco contrappuntistico, mentre tocca al pianoforte enunciare le linee melodiche del tema. Il merito va ascritto all'arrangiatore Scott Hardy, peraltro splendido contrabbassista dalla sonorità piena e rotonda. Oltre ad assoli fluenti ed ispirati, la formazione condivide empaticamente il medesimo assunto di base: l'approccio melodico-ritmico articolato, unito ad un disteso approccio esecutivo di largo respiro. Elastico e sinuoso, si impone soprattutto il fraseggio di Steve Wilson grazie ad uno stile personale al sax alto e soprano.
